What
a pear! On August 7, 2006, Dr. Charles
Johnson of LSU's Department of Horticulture examines
pears from the old pear tree near Simmesport, La.
in a first step toward identifying its particular
variety and the possible naming of the tree if its
variety is currently unknown. This could
lead to the preservation of the genetics of the
old tree, thereby helping boost biodiversity in
addition to providing more food from new trees grafted
and rooted from the old tree for donation to food
banks, etc.
UPDATE:
The final verdict in a nutshell? Among other differences,
this medium size pear resembles the Kieffer variety
without the pronounced calyx lobes of the Kieffer.
Therefore, whatever strain or variety this tree
represents, and whatever it might have been called,
I have renamed it the "Patricke Peartree Food
Bank" variety.
